Disney+ Not Working on Smart TV? Fix Guide

If Disney+ is not working on your smart TV, the fix is usually simple: unplug the TV for a full 60 seconds, restart your router, then update or reinstall the Disney+ app. Most crashes, freezes, and error codes come from stale app data, outdated software, or a weak connection — not a broken TV.

Work through the checks below in order. They cover Samsung, LG, Android TV / Google TV, and other smart TVs, and they address the most common Disney+ loading, crashing, and playback problems at home.

Why Is Disney+ Not Working on My Smart TV?

Disney+ failures on a smart TV almost always fall into five causes. Outdated app or TV software is the most common — the app updates frequently, and an old build can crash or refuse to sign in. Corrupted app data builds up over time and causes freezing or a black screen. A weak or unstable internet connection causes buffering, error screens, or videos that never start. Add a Disney+ server outage and account or region issues (such as a VPN), and you have nearly every case. The fixes below clear each cause one by one. If several apps are crashing — not just Disney+ — our Smart TV apps crashing fix covers the wider fault.

Is Disney+ Down, or Is It Just My TV?

Before touching any settings, rule out a Disney-side problem. Try Disney+ on your phone or another device on a different connection. If it fails everywhere, or the app opens but nothing plays on any device, the service is likely down — check an outage-tracking site such as Downdetector. Outages clear on Disney's side, and no setting on your TV will fix them. If Disney+ works fine on your phone over the same Wi-Fi, the problem is inside your TV or its app, so continue below.

Does a Proper Restart Fix Disney+ Crashing and Freezing?

Yes — and it must be a real power restart, not just pressing the remote's power button, which only puts most TVs into standby. Unplug the TV from the wall for a full 60 seconds (on Samsung TVs you can also hold the remote's Power button for about 5 seconds until the TV restarts). While the TV is unplugged, restart the router too: unplug it for 30 to 60 seconds, then let it fully boot up. Plug the TV back in and open Disney+. This "cold boot" clears frozen app processes and stale network sessions, and it is the most effective first fix for Disney+ crashing, freezing, and refusing to load.

Is My Internet Fast Enough for Disney+?

Disney+ needs a minimum of 5 Mbps for HD and 25 Mbps for 4K Ultra HD streaming. If several devices are streaming at once, or your router is far from the TV, the connection can drop below what the app needs, causing endless buffering or error screens.

Test your speed on a phone near the TV. If it is low, move the router closer, switch the TV to the 5 GHz Wi-Fi band, or use a wired Ethernet cable for the steadiest connection. Also disable any VPN on the TV or router, because Disney+ blocks many VPNs and can show a location error instead of playing. If the TV itself keeps dropping off the network, work through our Smart TV not connecting to WiFi fix next.

How Do I Update the Disney+ App and My TV Software?

Update both sides. On Samsung (Tizen), go to Home → Apps → Settings (gear icon) → Auto update → On so apps stay current; to update the TV itself, go to Settings → Support → Software Update → Update Now. On LG (webOS), open the LG Content Store and update Disney+ there, then check Settings → All Settings → General → About This TV → Check for Updates for firmware. On Android TV / Google TV, open the Google Play Store, search Disney+, and install the pending update, then check Settings → System → About → Software update for the TV system. A firmware update often fixes crashes that started suddenly after an app update.

Should I Clear the Cache or Reinstall Disney+?

Corrupted cache data is the main reason Disney+ freezes or shows a black screen. On Samsung TVs that support it, go to Settings → Support → Device Care → Manage Storage, select Disney+, open View Details, and choose Clear Cache. LG webOS does not offer a per-app cache button, so the dependable equivalent is to uninstall and reinstall the app from the LG Content Store — this always pulls the newest build and wipes corrupted files. On Android TV / Google TV, go to Settings → Apps → See All Apps → Disney+ → Storage & cache → Clear Cache; if that fails, choose Clear Data (you will need to sign in again). After reinstalling, sign in and test playback before changing anything else. If storage is tight, our guide to free up storage on your smart TV covers what else you can safely clear.

What Do Disney+ Error Codes 83, 42, and 39 Mean?

Error 83 is the most common — it means a device-compatibility or connection problem. Fix it by updating the app and TV software, making sure the TV's date and time are set to automatic, power-cycling everything, and reinstalling the app if it persists.

Error 42 means a connection timeout: your network cannot reach Disney's servers. Restart the router, verify the internet speed, and switch to Ethernet if Wi-Fi is weak.

Error 39 is a protected-content (DRM/HDCP) error — the TV cannot verify its right to play the video. Clear the app cache, check that date/time are correct, unplug the TV for 2 minutes for a deeper reset, and try a different HDMI port if you stream through an external device.

Less common codes: 73 means a location problem (disable any VPN), 75 means too many simultaneous streams (stop playback on another device), and 142 or 1026 mean the app cannot reach Disney's servers (check the outage and restart everything).

Is My TV Too Old for Disney+?

Possibly. Disney+ requires, for example, Samsung TVs from 2016 or later and LG TVs running webOS 3.0 or later. If the app is missing from your TV's app store or refuses to install even after updates, the TV is probably unsupported. You do not need a new TV: plug an external streaming device — such as a Fire TV Stick, Roku, or Apple TV — into any HDMI port, download Disney+ on it, and the TV works perfectly as a display. This also gives you a faster, more reliable app experience than an aging smart-TV platform.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does Disney+ keep crashing on my smart TV?

Corrupted app data or an outdated app version is the usual cause. Uninstall and reinstall Disney+, update the TV firmware, and cold-boot the TV. If several apps crash, reset the TV's Smart Hub (Samsung: Settings → Support → Self Diagnosis → Reset Smart Hub, PIN 0000).

Why is Disney+ showing a black screen on my TV?

A black screen is usually an HDCP/DRM handshake failure. Work through the restart section above first, and switch HDMI ports if you use an external streaming device.

Why does Disney+ buffer but other apps work fine?

Check your speed against the requirements in the internet section above, switch to the 5 GHz band or Ethernet, and lower the playback quality in the Disney+ app settings to test whether bandwidth is the issue.

Can a VPN stop Disney+ from working on a smart TV?

Yes. Disney+ blocks many VPNs and shows location errors — code 73 in the error-codes section above. Turn off the VPN on the TV, router, and phone, then restart the app.

Why do I get Error 83 on a TV that worked before?

It almost always appears after an app or firmware update, a time-setting change, or a network hiccup — the error-codes section above covers what code 83 means and the fixes to work through.

Does Disney+ work on older smart TVs?

Only if the model is still supported (roughly 2016 and later for Samsung and LG). For older TVs, use an external streaming device on HDMI — Disney+ will run fine there.

Work through the fixes in order — restart, connection, updates, then cache or reinstall — and most Disney+ failures clear without a factory reset or a new TV. If Disney+ now plays but another app is misbehaving, our Netflix not working on Smart TV fixes apply the same method.
