TV Stuck in Store / Demo Mode? How to Exit

TV stuck in store demo mode — how to exit retail mode

To get a TV out of store mode, switch its usage mode from Store (also called Retail or Demo) to Home in the settings. On a Samsung TV that is Home > Settings > All Settings > General & Privacy > System Manager > Usage Mode > Home Mode. The exact LG, Sony and TCL paths are below — the change takes under a minute, no tools are needed, and your picture settings will finally stay saved.

How Do You Know Your TV Is in Store Mode?

Store mode is a display setting meant for shop floors. Your TV is almost certainly in it if you notice any of these:

  • A demo video, promotional banner or feature pop-ups ("4K", "HDR", brand slogans) keep appearing on screen.
  • Your picture settings reset themselves — typically every 30 minutes, or every time you switch the TV on.
  • The picture is painfully bright and vivid, and brightness seems locked near maximum.
  • You bought an ex-display unit, or someone selected "Store" instead of "Home" during the first-time setup.

None of this is a fault. The TV is doing exactly what store mode tells it to do — you just need to tell it you are at home now.

Exit Store Mode on a Samsung TV

On modern Samsung TVs (2017 onwards):

  • Press Home on the remote and open Settings.
  • Go to All Settings > General & Privacy > System Manager > Usage Mode.
  • Enter the PIN if asked — the default is 0000.
  • Select Home Mode.

On some older Samsung models the path is shorter: Settings > General > System Manager > Usage Mode, or Support > Use Mode. On pre-2016 models without a Usage Mode menu, press the Volume button on the TV itself so the volume bar appears, then immediately press and hold the MENU button on the TV panel for about 7 seconds. The screen flashes and the picture mode changes to Dynamic — that confirms shop mode is off. Some older remotes also have a Tools button with a Store Demo option you can set to Off.

Exit Demo Mode on an LG TV

On LG webOS TVs:

  • Press the Settings (gear) button and choose All Settings.
  • Go to General > Additional Settings > Mode Setting.
  • Change it from Store Demo to Home Use.

On newer webOS versions the same option lives at All Settings > General > Devices > TV Management > Home/Store Mode — select Home Mode. The TV may restart to apply the change; that is normal. If promotional pop-ups still appear afterwards, return to Additional Settings and make sure Home Promotion is switched off as well.

Exit Demo Mode on a Sony Bravia TV

Sony's own Bravia help guide gives a two-part fix. First, stop the running demo loop: press the ACTION MENU button on the remote and select Suspend Demo. Then make the change permanent:

  • Press HOME and open Settings.
  • Select Retail mode settings.
  • Disable Demo mode and disable Picture reset mode.

Turning off Picture reset mode matters just as much — it is the setting that wipes your picture adjustments on a timer while the TV is in retail use. On newer Google TV models, look for Retail mode settings under Settings > System if you do not see it at the top level.

Exit Store Mode on a TCL TV

TCL Google TV / Android TV: open Settings > System > Advanced Settings > Usage Mode and select Home Mode. Restart the TV afterwards so the change fully applies.

TCL Roku TV: TCL's official support page confirms there is no mode toggle in the Roku TV menus — store mode can only be changed by resetting the TV and choosing correctly during setup. Go to Settings > System > Advanced System Settings > Factory Reset > Factory reset everything. When the TV restarts into the setup wizard, select Home Use (not Store Use) when asked.

TCL Fire TV: the same applies — go to Settings > Device & Software > Reset to Factory Defaults (default PIN 0000 if you never set one) and pick home use during setup.

Vizio, Hisense and Other Brands

The naming changes but the logic is identical everywhere. On Vizio TVs, open Menu > System and look for Mode Settings or Retail Mode, and set it to Home. On Hisense Android/Google TVs, follow the Google TV path: Settings > System > Advanced Settings > Usage Mode > Home Mode.

For any other brand, open Settings and search the General and System menus for one of these four labels: Usage Mode, Demo Mode, Retail Mode or Store Mode. One of them will be there — it is how every manufacturer ships TVs to shops.

Still Stuck? Factory Reset as a Last Resort

If the usage mode option is missing, greyed out, or the TV slips back into demo mode after every restart, a factory reset always works: reset the TV from its System menu, and when the first-time setup asks where the TV will be used, choose Home. This is also the only route on TCL Roku TVs, as explained above.

Remember that a factory reset erases apps, accounts, Wi-Fi passwords and all settings, so use it only when the direct mode switch fails. Also re-check the mode after any large software update — occasionally an update on a former display unit can re-enable the demo loop.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does my TV keep going back into demo mode?

Because the usage mode is still set to Store somewhere. On Sony TVs, also make sure Picture reset mode is off in Retail mode settings. If the mode is set to Home and it still returns, perform a factory reset and choose Home Use during setup.

Why do my picture settings reset every 30 minutes?

That timer-based reset is the signature behaviour of store mode — shops want the display back at full brightness no matter what customers change. Switching the usage mode to Home stops it immediately.

Will switching to Home mode delete my apps and accounts?

No. Changing the usage mode deletes nothing — your apps, logins and channels stay as they are. Only a factory reset erases everything, which is why it is the last resort.

What is the PIN when I change the usage mode?

Samsung and TCL use 0000 as the factory default PIN unless you or the store changed it. If 0000 does not work on a second-hand TV, a factory reset restores the default.

Is store mode bad for the TV?

It does not damage the TV, but the maximum-brightness demo picture looks harsh at home, wears an OLED panel faster than normal settings, and makes calibration pointless because nothing you set is kept.
